Like a lot of Pacific Northwesterners, Jim looks forward to ski season. But after two knee surgeries, he’s been off the slopes for the last couple of years.
“I remember there was a time before my last knee operation that I came off a plane from New York, and I almost called for a wheelchair!” he laughs.
So when Jim joined Arivale, his two primary goals were to lose weight (to make his knee recovery easier) and to get back to the slopes the next year.
From the very beginning, Jim was surprised at how Arivale’s approach to wellness was different from what he’d done in the past.
“Throughout my life, I’ve always tried to do things that were beneficial for my health,” Jim says, “But one thing I’ve never really done is try to lose weight slowly instead of going on terrible crash-course diets. Change your lifestyle, change your body—it’s absolutely true.”
So far his Arivale Coach, Julia has been an integral part of his wellness journey: “She is a wealth of knowledge and a key to the program.”
“I think the most impressive part was when she reviewed my second blood draw results … I could see that the things she was recommending actually made a difference. It was so encouraging to see things that markers that were in the red change to green.”
By his second blood draw, Jim lost weight, decreased his insulin and inflammation markers, and lowered his blood pressure and cholesterol.

Not only do Jim’s biomarkers show that his health is improving, Jim feels physically better. He even went for a jog after a 20-year hiatus.
When we asked what the toughest thing for him to change was, Jim, an avid wine collector quickly replied, “Oh, wine for sure,” he laughs and follows up by saying, “But it’s getting easier. And I’ve been eating a bunch of arugula and adding more hummus to my diet. I don’t think I’ve had as much hummus in my life.”
Jim’s go-to meal before Arivale was a big steak, some potatoes and a side salad completed with a big bowl of ice cream. While he still has steak and ice cream once in a while, nowadays he has recently been reacquainted with salmon, found his favorite green—arugula—and stocked his refrigerator with apples and bananas for breakfast.
“It’s not about the major changes or the crash changes that make you miserable,” Jim explains.
Jim believes this program is about what you can really do for yourself.
“I don’t want to be taking medication later in life just because I didn’t do anything about it when I was young.
Jim laughs, saying he even got a blood pressure cuff to monitor his pressure at Julia’s suggestion. “I know with Arivale I can use common sense, follow-up and see the change.”
What’s next for Jim? Through his ongoing recovery and lifestyle changes, he’s optimistic that he’ll be back on the slopes next year to show everyone that he’s still got it.
Jim has been a joy to work with. He is very open and receptive to learning and has really embraced the diet and exercise changes in a sustainable way. Jim’s clear goals have helped him to stay focused on these changes, even with the ups and downs that inevitably occur with life.
