A bold new approach.

Providence St. Joseph Health is leading the way in driving the paradigm shift that is taking place in health care today. This, combined with our vast network of hospitals, outstanding clinicians, and the rich collection of data from the more than 3.3 million patients we serve will help accelerate discovery of powerful insights into scientific wellness and disease. Further, it will enable us for the first time ever to take systems driven approaches for optimizing wellness and minimizing disease to patient care.

The opportunity is now.

Caregivers can register now to be part of the Providence-Arivale Feasibility Study of Scientific Wellness. There are only 500 spots open for caregivers in the Renton/Seattle area. Those who register but are not selected for the 500 total spots will be put on a waitlist and notified as additional opportunities to participate in the study or other Arivale events become available.

  • This is a three-year study; caregivers will be able to improve their wellness while contributing to scientific discovery with the potential to impact health care for generations to come.
  • As part of the Study, caregivers make twice-yearly payments of $350 in 2017 and 2018, for a total cost of $1,400. The total value of the Arivale program for three years is $5,497—so caregivers get a nearly 75-percent discount on the cost.
  • Your HRA, HSA, or Health Care FSA account dollars can be used to fund your portion of the cost of the study.

Providence is teaming up with Arivale to provide caregivers a scientific path to wellness as part of an exciting new Study. Arivale’s groundbreaking program utilizes a systems approach to optimizing individual wellness. As a caregiver who enrolls in this research Study, you’ll work with a dedicated Arivale Coach to reach your wellness goals based on data from your genetics, blood, saliva, gut microbiome, and lifestyle. Throughout the program, your Coach will use your data to deliver a completely customized action plan meant to help improve your wellness across six health dimensions: heart health, diabetes risk, inflammation, optimal nutrition, optimal aging and stress management.

The Arivale-Providence Feasibility Study of Scientific Wellness (“Study”) is a 3-year, longitudinal pilot Study aiming to determine the impact of a Scientific Wellness intervention on health, wellness, quality of life, productivity and medical claims of employees in the Providence system.
Previous research conducted by the Institute for Systems Biology in Seattle, WA assessed the impact of longitudinal monitoring of multiple types of data on an individual (including clinical and functional lab tests, genetics, gut microbiome, and lifestyle and behavioral data) combined with tailored coaching to prioritize this data and recommend actionable lifestyle interventions – an approach called “scientific wellness”. Findings from this preliminary research showed that the scientific wellness intervention improved wellness and clinical metrics and was associated with a high degree of engagement and satisfaction in the participants (L Hood et al, manuscript in preparation). The Study seeks to advance and expand on these early findings by delivering a similar coaching program based on dense, dynamic data clouds to employees in the Providence system. Specifically, this Study will allow us to determine the impact of the scientific wellness intervention on wellness and quality of life over a longer period of time, as well as to assess employee productivity and healthcare costs, impact and efficiency, which were not assessed in the original Study.
Arivale was co-founded by Dr. Lee Hood, genomics pioneer and Providence’s Chief Science Officer, in 2015, based on research from the Institute for Systems Biology’s One Hundred Person Wellness Project.
“Together, we will connect research and clinical expertise to shift health care delivery from a disease focus to a wellness focus,” said Rod Hochman, MD, president and CEO of Providence Health & Services, when Dr. Hood joined the Providence Team.

  • Online assessments that provide you and your coach a foundation of your baseline health.
  • Deep, personalized data across six health dimensions: Heart Health, Diabetes Risk, Inflammation, Optimal Nutrition, Healthy Aging, and Stress Management.
  • A personalized baseline wellness report presenting a curated view of your clinical data points and which health dimensions you should prioritize improving.
  • Two comprehensive blood analyses that look in-depth at more than 85 biomarkers, versus the 20-25 that might be examined during a typical annual physical.
  • Microbiome test assessing your microbe diversity.
  • Saliva test looking at your stress hormones, cortisol and DHEA.
  • Tailored and personalized monthly coaching calls with your Arivale Coach to prioritize your wellness plan and optimize your health, with weekly check-ins via text or email.
  • Fitbit Charge HR to monitor your activity (steps), sleep, and resting heart rate. Lifestyle is a big determinant of your overall health. The Fitbit provides you and your coach a connection to your lifestyle data.
The Arivale-Providence Feasibility Study of Scientific Wellness is a 3-year Study that ignites a lifetime commitment to wellness. Your first year is all about establishing a baseline and presenting you an action plan. Years 2 and 3 focus on an even more focused path to achieving and sustaining your wellness potential.
As part of the Study, caregivers make twice yearly payments of $350 in 2017 and 2018, for a total cost of $1,400. The total value of the Arivale program for three years is $5,497 – so caregivers get a nearly 75-percent discount on the cost. Participants will provide payment card information at arivale.com/caregiver upon formal enrollment on December 12.
Yes, the Arivale-Providence Feasibility Study of Scientific Wellness is eligible for reimbursement at this time. Accompanying each of the (4) $350 payments will be a receipt noting the reimbursable expense. Please contact your Providence HR representative for any further details or questions.
Benefits-eligible caregivers of the Renton Office are eligible to register for the Arivale-Providence Feasibility Study of Scientific Wellness. Caregivers who register need to be able to speak English.

My Arivale Coach

You will have a dedicated Coach who will work with you throughout your journey to help you optimize your wellness. Your Coach gets to know you first by reviewing your responses to a set of interactive online assessments and then via an initial 30-minute call to better understand your goals, motivations, challenges, and aspirations. You’ll have a 30-minute call each subsequent month to discuss the next steps in your journey towards wellness. Out of each call you will receive personalized, prioritized actionable recommendations that tie together your personal goals and the data collected throughout the Providence-Arivale Scientific Wellness Study. In between calls, your Coach will be available via text and email to keep you motivated, answer your questions, and hold you accountable.
Arivale Coaches are Registered Dietitians, Registered Nurses or Clinical Nutritionists.
Each coaching call is unique. The first call is an opportunity to for you to meet your personal Arivale Coach, learn more about your journey, and set your initial goals. During each subsequent call, your coach will: discuss your progress on previous Action Items, discuss any new lifestyle or other data and explain what it means, and prioritize Action Items moving forward that tie together your personal goals with your lab results and lifestyle. Your coach’s purpose is to guide and support you throughout your journey and help you optimize your wellness.

Fitbit Charge HR

Your lifestyle (e.g., what you eat, how active you are) can have an enormous impact on your overall wellbeing. A wearable device like a Fitbit offers great insight into your physical activity, your sleep, heart rate, and more. This provides a wealth of data for us to analyze and, combined with your genetics and lab tests, gives us a more complete picture of you. This way, we can deliver recommendations that are designed to help maximize their impact on your wellbeing. Plus, clients tell us they love the immediate feedback, added accountability, and fun their Fitbit provides.
Your Arivale dashboard is currently compatible with Fitbit and your information will sync up once you connect your device to your profile. We urge you to continue using any device that helps keep you active. We encourage you, however, to at least wear the Fitbit for the first two weeks of the Providence-Arivale Scientific Wellness Study so we can get an accurate baseline of your resting heart rate, sleep, and general activity.

Blood Draw Information

Our lab partner, LabCorp, will collect about 95mL of blood, which is about a fifth of the amount of blood collected when someone donates blood.  Although the amount of blood collected is small, it is spread across 16 tubes due to all the different clinical tests being run.
To maintain the integrity and quality of your data, you must conduct your blood draw at an approved LabCorp location or at an onsite blood fair organized by Arivale in conjunction with LabCorp.
You will receive full instructions for preparing for your first blood draw once you are accepted into the Arivale-Providence Feasibility Study of Scientific Wellness. In short, you will need to discontinue non-essential dietary supplements and OTC medications four days in advance, alcohol and vigorous exercise 24 hours in advance, and fast for 12 hours. Any prescription medication or supplements should not be discontinued.
No, the blood draw is covered in the price of the Arivale-Providence Feasibility Study of Scientific Wellness.

Microbiome and Saliva

Your gut microbiome (bacteria in your gut) is a fascinating, emerging area of science and wellness. There is a consensus among scientific and medical experts that the gut is very important for human health. Though research on the gut microbiome is still in its infancy, your microbiome test will aid scientific discovery around this thriving ecosystem within us all. However, its current use to determine the state of one’s health is very limited at this point.
Cortisol and DHEA (found in your saliva) are both important hormones secreted by the adrenal glands that can tell us how your body is responding to stress. Elevations in adrenal hormones may indicate chronic stress and increased risk for a number of diseases, including diabetes, obesity, heart disease and cognitive decline. People who practice regular stress management techniques may be able to effectively decrease their stress hormone levels. While cortisol and DHEA can be measured in blood, studies show that a much better indicator of stress response is obtained when we look at levels at different time points throughout the day, rather than just a single time point like we would get with a blood draw.

Genetics

We look at genes that evidence suggests are linked to wellness. We do not review or report on medical genetics (e.g., risk for specific diseases such as breast cancer or Alzheimer’s). We will report on behavioral and lifestyle-related genes such as those that increase risk for nutritional deficiencies, genes that may influence your inflammatory response, your ability to respond to environmental toxins and more.  In addition, you will learn what diet may be most effective for you if you are trying to lose weight, how fat and carbohydrate affect your capacity for weight gain, and the link between genetics and soft tissue injury.
We only report genetic information related to your nutritional wellness and lifestyle. We do not report on medical genetic results such as whether you have a genetic variant associated with an increased risk for a specific disease or disorder.

My Data

No. At no time will Providence have the ability to see your identifiable data. Providence has requested that all DE-IDENTIFIED clinical lab data be shared with its third-party health analytics data warehouse to track the Providence population’s overall health trends. None of this data is personally identifiable
Your results will publish to your Arivale online dashboard. We work with our independent partner labs to collect and analyze your clinical data, and endeavor to get it back to you within 60 days of your blood draw.
No, however we encourage you to share the results with your physician at your discretion.
Your information is stored in two separate databases. Your personal data is protected by federal and state privacy laws, including HIPAA (the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act), by the privacy safeguards of the Study, and by the safeguards of the Privacy Programs of the Study sponsors. We will also neither publish or otherwise publically distribute any of your personal health information (PHI).
In addition to using your PHI for the purposes of this Study, we may remove identifying information, such as name, address and Social Security Number from the Study data and use this de-identified data to conduct research on topics outside the scope of the present Study. For example, we may use the de-identified information, aggregated with the de-identified information of other participants, to advance scientific discovery in areas such as gene function. We may also use this de-identified data to improve the effectiveness of our wellness services. We may publish or otherwise publically distribute these de-identified aggregated results.
Blood samples, stool samples, saliva samples and other specimens submitted to the Arivale-Providence Study may be used for a range of future research purposes, such as the Study of characteristics including DNA, RNA, proteins, and lipids; physical traits; and biochemical traits. Any specimens you provide may be analyzed or otherwise incorporated into the Study. Your individual results will not be made available to the public by the Study, but de-identified results may be published or shared in aggregate. The results of research studies that do not have direct and immediate impacts on wellness or coaching will not necessarily be returned to participants.
Research scientists from Providence or Arivale may publish data from the Study in scientific or medical journals. These publications will only be based on discoveries from de-identified data. Publications will not make your individual data public. Participants will have no Intellectual Property rights to these data and or publications, findings.
We store samples of your blood and DNA to use in future research. These samples are collected at the same time we are collecting blood for your regular Study results.
